The Guruve-Mazowe Wind Power Project is a pre-feasibility stage 100MW project being developed solely by Tatanga Energy. The project is being developed in Mashonaland Central Province, along the border of the Guruve and Mazowe Rural District Councils in northern Zimbabwe.
The project comprises the installation of a grid-connected 100 MW wind power plant as well as requisite transmission infrastructure. The Project is at a pre-feasibility stage. As part of the pre-feasibility studies, a wind mast was installed in September 2021 on top of the northern tip of the Great Dyke to measure and record wind speeds and direction. The data will assist in determining the type and size of wind turbines that are best suited to the local wind regime. Turbines proposed could probably be in the range of 2 to 5 Mega Watt (MW) capacity. Depending on the results of the feasibility studies, hybridation with solar power and battery storage could be contemplated.
The Project will be built using proven technology. The intent is to sell the full electricity output generated from the Project to the Zimbabwe Electricity Transmission and Distribution Company (ZETDC) under a long-term (25 year) power purchase agreement (PPA). To date the Project has support from key stakeholders which include the Ministry of Energy and Power Development, the Zimbabwe Investment Development Agency (“ZIDA”), the Guruve and Mazowe Rural District Councils, the Ministry of State for Provincial Affairs and the Ministry of Lands. The Environmental and Social Impact Assessment (ESIA) report was completed in 2023.
